Top ten TV shows
I’m not watching much TV anymore, but since Alex J. Cavanaugh hosts this cool blogfest I’ll try to twist my brain and come up with a list of favorites.
Sometimes I watch a movie, but never TV series. I watch the news and my favorite sports, and thats it, basically. Number one on my list, no doubt, is Soccer World Cup, not a regular TV show maybe, but it feels like a very intense one, every 4th year when the ball is rolling.
The first (and last) soap I saw was Dynasty. Not sure if I liked it, but it has to be on my list. When I grew up in the 1970s, we had only one TV channel, state-controlled public broadcasting. Commercial TV, cable TV and satellite was illegal. There were incredible discussions and big concerns, in the parliament and in media; TV soaps would destroy the moral of the country and damage the fragile souls of the people. In 1981, the sensation happened; Dynasty was approved by the authorities and the public broadcasting company! The entire nation was watching.
Today we have hundreds of channels on cable and satellite, like most other countries. More junk, less quality, that's the trend.
Anyway, here’s my top 10 list:
1. Soccer World Cup
2. Alpine skiing World Cup
3. Winter Olympics
4. Summer Olympics
5. South Park
6. Stingers (Australian crime)
7. Headbanger’s Ball (heavy metal on MTV)
8. M*A*S*H
9. Twin Peaks (boring after 4-5 parts)
10. Dynasty

Haha, I guess the World Cup is enough of a TV event for it to qualify for your list. And biathlon is definitely more exciting than most television shows.
ReplyDeleteI remember Stingers. Is that still on?
Great list. This was harder than I thought to narrow down.
ReplyDeleteDid you grow up in Norway? Only one state controlled channel? That really surprises me! Funny that Dynasty would get approval! I watched Dallas, but by Dynasty has I think transitioned to other weekend activities.
ReplyDeleteA big sports fan I see! Cool to see MASH on your list - and Headbanger's Ball!! Used to watch that every Saturday night.
ReplyDeleteThanks for participating in the blogfest!
I'm such a TV addict that it's almost stunning to me when I discover someone is not similarly inclined.
ReplyDeleteBut I do love the Olympics!
Your leaders were right. TV and cable does destroy the mind. I am a prime example.

Cruella: I don't think Stingers is on anymore, but not sure. I kind of lost the interest when Anita Hegh left the series.
ReplyDeleteRenae: I'm not a sports idiot, even though my list may leave give impression. I only watch a few selected events.
Hart: When Dynasty came on, it was such a big sensation that we just had to watch, by pure curiosity.
Alex: Headbanger's Ball was cool. MTV took it off for a while, maybe it's started again now (not sure if we have MTV anymore, have to ask the kids). There was another cool show when I was in the teens called Rockpalast. It was broadcasted live from Essen, Germany, two or three times a year, to all European countries >:)
Karen: Between the Olympics and Soccer World Cup, I find more interesting stuff on internet than on TV.
Helen: I think your mind appears to be brilliant, always cool and interesting stuff in your blog >:)
I love your take on the whole thing!!! It just shows how sometimes we love different things but all in all it's still television!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely brilliant! If I would've thought like that the Olympics would've easily made my list, along with watch my Toronto Maple Leafs :)
ReplyDeleteThere's just something about the Olympics. I don't watch those sports except for maybe figure skating or gymnastics at any other time, but I just love it.
ReplyDeleteI've watched a bit of mash, but I never really got into southpark, the only southpark I did watch all the way through was the one on world of warcraft.
ReplyDeleteSPorts fan! Love that those are your favorite.

Headbanger's Ball - classic! That one takes me back. Good list. I love the Winter Olympics!
ReplyDeletemtv head bangers ball... i miss it, they way it used to be...
ReplyDeleteiZombie

ReplyDeleteYvonne.
That was certainly a different sort of list.

Tossing It Out
Jen: Maybe I went a little bit outside the rules here. But I just listed the stuff I like to watch >:)
ReplyDeleteMary: Olympics is magic. It's fun to get a chance to see some of sports that are not often on TV, the small sports that can't compete with soccer and (American) football and ice hockey for commercials.
Summer Ross: I've never played WoW myslef, but my 16 yo son loves the game.
Clarissa: I love to watch the events on my list, but I don't spend much time on the things that run all the time, like NFL in US and Premier League in UK.
Jennie and iZombie: Yes, Headbangers Ball was great. Fortunately, I have 30 GigaBytes of heavy metal on my iPod >:)
WtMWoP: I live on the east side of the Atlantic ... in The Old World >:)
Now that's a different list! I like your style.
ReplyDeletelol! sports.. yeah... i don't have anything to say about that... but i think my hubby might have a similar list! :)
ReplyDeletearlee and Ellie: I should probably blame it on my Tourette ... love the swearing in South Park >:)))
ReplyDeleteaspiring_x: Sports, that't men's TV soap, for sure >:)
I remember watching Dynasty with my parents each week. I thought it was so glamorous!
ReplyDeleteI never thought to put sports on my list!! Wimbledon & all other tennis events would top my list. Then hockey, Olympics, volleyball, baseball... We're sports nuts in our family!
ReplyDeleteI put MASH on my list, too. And I didn't even think of the Olympics, but we never miss it. (We actually tape it... Wonder what that means?)
ReplyDeleteI see you love your sport :)
ReplyDeleteYay for an Aussie inclusion :)

W.I.P. It: A Writer's Journey
I love that instead of singling anyone out, they make fun of everyone equally :)
ReplyDeleteYou know, I don't think I've even met anyone around here who hasn't watched some of the Olympics at least one year.
I'm with you on shows 1,3 & 4. We hardly watch TV either, Husband likes BBC, Sky, CNN; we often watch DVD's of art movies (just watched Deepha Metha's trilogy on India), but have watched some good series as well - Foyle's War, Lark Rise to Candleford are two recent ones that were good!
ReplyDeleteJudy
Hmm, should sport shows be counted? I can think of a few: Friends, Bewitched, Thank God You're Here, Master Chef, tennis...
ReplyDeleteMy Darcy Mutates…
Karen and Kelly: Dynasty was new and exciting and glamorous at that time. Not sure if I would have watched it today. I guess we're spoiled now, with all kind of TV shows to choose from.
ReplyDeleteJemi: I never got hooked on tennis on TV, but loved to play it when I was a kid. I grew up on the countryside with no tennis courts nearby. We played in the school yard and in empty parking lots, setting up our bikes in the middle as net.
Ishta: Olympics is cool. I've never taped it though, but I have a couple of DVDs with highlights.
Lynda: The Aussie series, Stingers, was cool, especially in the beginning, before Anita Hegh left
Angela: South Parks rocks. I loved the episode when the local coffee shop was challenged by the big coffee syndicate with the hilarious name Hardbucks Coffee >:)
Judy: You should check out #2 as well, the Alpine Skiing World Cup. Good DVDs you have. Buy your husband the Kurosawa DVD collection for Christmas.
Enid: Sport shows were probably not intended to be included, but I had to list stuff I watch. I'm still waiting for a series with Kate >;)
South Park is super offensive but i adore it too it just makes e crack up
ReplyDeleteoh, DYNASTY, boy did I love watching that as a kid :) Not sure it was for kids, but I was watching it regularly, it's the mother of all soaps! And Alexis was mother of all soapy villains :)
ReplyDeleteAll these top 10s. Soccer world cup is definitely up there for us too.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant to put the Olympics; I so love watching them and cheering!
