Out of the silence
This year has been very bad when it comes to metal concerts around here. The outdoor festival on town square in May was cancelled, and there has been nothing else worth mentioning.
Also, I have hardly used my iPod at all last months. I've rather enjoyed the sound of silence, which is quite nice, actually.
But yesterday Mayhem came to town, to play at the our rock museum. The concert was very good. It was like a reverse tour of their career, starting with recent songs, and ending with some good old stuff from the Mysteriies Dom Sathanas album, iincluding the magnificent Freezing Moon of course.
Here is an early recording of Freezing Moon, with vocals by Dead (who comitted suicide in 1991) and lead guitar by Euronymus (who was murdered in 1993).
Enjoy the dark side >:)
(That's a picture I took at the concert yesterday. This time I remembered to bring my camera)

I love that song, it's become to me the epitome if a sick, heavy atmosphere. I loved Dead's vocals too, they were influenced by his death metal background. But I have to admit that except for Messiah, they pretty much always had good vocalists.
ReplyDeleteYou got a good photo!
ReplyDeleteBen: I enjoyed some of the recent Mayhem stuff, but Freezing Moon is still my favorite. I agree that Dead's vocals have kind of a death metal touch. You know, he came from a death metal country; Sweden.
ReplyDeleteAlex: I set my camera in burst mode and shoot series of 5-10 pics. Then I usually get a couple of fairly good ones.
I like metal a lot, though I haven't been in the habit of live music for a couple decades... Anymore, the only music I like live is single artists that don't draw crowds of thousands... it is the full arena that bugs me, not the music.
ReplyDeleteSorry though, since you like it, not much has happened there recently.
Those names seem to be unfortunately related to their destinies. I think, if I were in that band, I'd go with something like 'GetsLaidAlot' or something.
I'd rather have the silence (which is a rare commodity these days!) but glad you enjoyed your concert! Just popping in to say hope you have an especially good day today! :)

Metal and ear ringing don't go together. So I've to leave all the metal to you.
ReplyDeleteSuicide, murder! Metal is dark! You know, I think I just figured out why I've never been able to embrace it (well, I've likely known all along but couldn't articulate it): it's the lack of melody. Or maybe there is melody but I just can't find it, and if I can't grab on to melody then there must be exquisite lyrics or I abandon a song (or music style) all together.
ReplyDeleteIt's so interesting though, how metal appeals to all kinds of people from all kinds of backgrounds. I find equal nerd to equal drop out to equal artist to equal business person listening to it. That's pretty cool. Yet, I still don't enjoy it. And then, I'm prone to migraines, so I do tend to migrate toward soothing sound. ;)
Did you get a t-shirt too? :)
ReplyDeleteHart: I enjoy metal concerts on both big areas and smaller scenes, but I think the club concerts are the most fun. WOuld loved to be in a band with you. My nichname would probably been BadDrummer >;)
ReplyDeleteJudy: I like both silence and metal, but must admit it's been too much silence and too few metal concerts this year
Enid: With your ear ringing you better stay away from metal concerts for a while
Jayne: I find the darkness of metal (at least some of the sub genres like black, death, doom and goth metal) quite fascinating. Also, there's a hell of a lot of good musicians in the metal genres. I agree it's pretty cool to see the wide range of people going to metal concerts, from the drop outs to business men and scientists (like me). And I have found that most people with long black hair and corpse paint are very nice and peaceful.
Liz: Yes, of course I bought a T-shirt; I always do. You have to support the band. It's hard to make a living as a musician.
I haven't heard of the group or the song but it's sad that two main group members have died. I'm glad you enjoyed the concert.
ReplyDeleteClarissa: Mayhem is kind of a niche band, well-known worldwide within the black-metal community, but not outside. The band was hit hard by the suicide and murder in the early 1990s. Also, former Mayhem member Count Grischnak, known from his one-man-band Burzum, was jailed for 18 years, for the murder of Euronymous, and for burning down 3 churches. He was released from jail in 2010.
