Draped in white
Winterland is draped in white. Cold and dry snow. It's great when your properly dressed for the outdoor. We spent the weekend skiing, both in groomed piste and off piste.
When skiing off piste, little boy lost his ski in the powder. I took off my skis and used one as a probe stick. Then I followed his track and probed for every foot until I hit his ski. It took us about half an hour to find it.
The days are short now. The sun comes above the horizon just for a few hours (south of the arctic circle). At 2pm it's dusk, with kind of pink-bluish colors. The lifts close at 3 pm when it's getting dark.
It was cold when we came to our cabin. The olive oil had turned to wax. We put the bottle in the fireplace for a few minutes to bring it back to liquid. Then we cooked dinner, chicken with Thai curry and rice. The kids were hungry. Then we watched a movie in TV (Narnia) and ate candy (we even tasted some before dinner, bad dad I am).
The two-hour drive back home yesterday was challenging with icy roads and drifting snow and darkness. No problem. We just take it easy >:)

We had a lovely -20, dry squeaky snow to walk on and a clear night and morning as well (in Dalarna). (And wonder of all wonders, the trains ran more or less as they should after a few false starts!) Sleeping in the attic under a sloping ceiling, I woke up now and then to turn over so the other side of my face would become warm.
ReplyDeleteWhere do you live? It sounds beautiful.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great time to me! We're not white, just cold here.
ReplyDeleteCOLD. Are you in Canada? Weather took one hell of a drop in here too. Little dog loves the snow, but little dog hates minus 20.
ReplyDeleteAwe Lovely!! Sounds like fun, skiing. Never done it but looks fun! Glad you had a nice weekend!
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful! And I'm glad you had fun skiing, though I remember the days of lost skis and that is TERRIBLE. No fun at all! I'd forgotten the dark thing though... I think that would depress me.. it is bad enough that it is getting dark while I walk home from work (4-5).
ReplyDeleteSilme: Looks like you had a great weekend too. My nose thinks that -20 is a little bit too cold though. The railway company has apparently learned from the previous winter >:)
ReplyDeleteMatthew: I live in Winterland, at 63 degrees north >:)
Alex: Cold is better when it's white, at least if you enjoy skiing (or shoveling snow)
Ben: I'm on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean >:)
Colene: Skiing is fun, you should try it. Maybe a southern girl like you should start with spring skiing or summer skiing >:)
Hart: Dark is not depressing at all. The polar darkness has it's own charm. Where we're living, 400 km (250 miles) south of the arctic circle, we still have about 4 hours of daylight in mid winter. And the dark winters is a price worth paying for the light summers >:)
Skiing sounds like fun!
ReplyDeleteAbout trains in winter: No they have not learnt or improved, all the trains going earlier or later broke down. But ours went! Choo choo! I need a driver's license. That would lessen the strain of winter.
ReplyDelete-20c is OK if it is the right sort of cold. Dry inland cold. It did not bother me much - in the capital -10c is a killer because of the humidity.
For me, the snow is incredibly beautiful but when you're inside, it's great!

Jealous! Jealous! Jealous! Looks mystical and magical. Supposed to be sun here, but grey clouds and wet, which I shouldn't moan about as we desperately needed the rain. But the white winterland looks stunning!

Sounds like good times. I grew up in Michigan so I really miss snow and skiing and all. The pics are absolutely beautiful and takes me back to a time of fun with friends I grew up with. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteNice photo, remind me of the scenery in the Narnia movie. Are you very good at cooking hot and spicy food?

You lead an interesting life. I'm so glad you write about it. My life is boring, I swear. About the most interesting thing today is my visit to the eye doctor for my yearly checkup. No change from last year, but doctor has decided to change my contacts. Now instead of contacts that correct my near-sightedness, she's having me try a contact in one eye that allows me to see far and one in the other eye that allows me to see close, for computer work. Okaaaaay.
ReplyDeleteSilme: Yes, -20 feels alot colder on the coast than inland.
ReplyDeleteClarissa: Snow is beautiful when you're indoor and fun when outdoor >:)
Judy: It would be fun to experience Christmas time in mid-summer on the southern hemisphere
Stephen: Thanks. You should go back to Michigan to ski from time to time >:)
Enid: I'm not good at cooking anything, but I have a handful of dishes that I can make, including pasta sauce, Tex-Mex, and hot and spicy chicken wok. This time, however, we just bought a can of Thai-curry sauce in the supermarket.
Helen: I bet you're having lots of fun in Texas too. Austin is a cool city with some great music clubs. You apparently had an interesting visit to the eye doctor. Maybe we can call it Winnie-the-Pooh contacts, what she gave you >:D
