To write or not to write

"What are you doing?"

"Writing."

"I thought you were working."

"I was working. Now I’m writing."

"What a useless waste of time."

"My writing is about as useless as your sewing and broidery."

"Sewing is something everybody are doing, following a straight-forward pattern. You can’t just write a novel."

"Why not?"

"It's not the kind of things that anyone can do"

"I'm trying anyway"

"Why can't you just do normal things that other people do?"

"I'm doing that too."

"Like going to black-metal concerts and reading Dostoyevsky. Is that normal?"

"It's normal for me."

"You’re always so eccentric. You learnt to play drums on the Internet, and now you’re gonna learn to write a novel."

"Yes."

"Your biggest fear is to be viewed as ordinary."

"It’s just the way I am."

"I guess that’s why I liked you in the first place."

"Thanks."

  1. Huh. You learned to play the drums off the internet? That's bad ass!

  2. One can learn anything off the internet, be it drums, writing a novel, or for that sake, embroidery...

  3. At least writing is a cheap activity. Scrap paper, a pencil...that's all you need. Embroidery, on the other hand...

  4. I'm glad I'm not the only person who writes with a soundtrack of Mayhem and Anaal Nathrakh

  5. Colene: I'm a very bad drummer, but the few basic things I can, I've mostly learnt off the Internet. Now I'm trying to learn blast beats, but it's damned difficult (I need a double base)

Silme: Yes, that's true. The writer blogs I follow (in the right margin) are great sites to learn how to write >:)

Elizabeth: Yes, EMbroidery, that's the right word (I'm not doing it myself), and yes, writing is cheap, as cheap as theoretical physics. A lap-top is nice too have, though.

Ben: Mayhem is nice when writing . I'm not familiar with Anaal N. Will check it out.

  6. I giggled all the way through this. My husband would have such a similar conversation if he were more direct. Instead he sort of snarkily grumbles about what I'm not doing (cleaning the basement, for instance).

I think writing is a very defensible endeavor--it is something you can continue to improve on (and there fore grow with) forever--and I think anything like that is good. Keep at it!

  7. I think I've lived that conversation. Enjoy being different and creating!

  9. Hart: In our family she is the direct one. Thanks for your support. Writing is like skiing, there's no limit >:)

Mary: I won't change, and the writing will proceed, for sure >:)

  10. Alex: Good question. I can't see anything wrong with it. And I've learnt that most people with long black hair and corpse paint are very nice and friendly >:)

  11. Such a fun conversation. Made me smile. Learning the drums on the Internet and writing are things smart people do. You could tell her that and see if you get any supper that night. I bet she doesn't want to be viewed as ordinary either - and clearly she's not since she's with you.

  12. Helen: There is signs of change right now. It seams like I slowly start to get acceptance for my useless writing hobby >:)

TGE: It was an interesting conversation, and not the first one of this kind >:D
