Private property

I don't want to own anybody.

I don't want to be owned by anybody.

It's just this little madness. Private property is evil. Marx was right, but his theory has not been properly tested.

It's against human nature

  1. I definitely see what Marx was saying...but I need to have my little bit of space! With a fence around it, preferably. I'm just too introverted. If I don't have private property than that means I might have people crowding into my space. :)

Marx would just shake his head over me...

  2. I'm against the application of pure formulas, but force it to admit, as time passed, Marx's point grows stronger.

Nowadays, having a house, a car and a LCD screen defines you as a human being. When you're done acquiring that, Martha Stewart is never out of ideas to suck you dry.

I'm not a marxist by any means, but I find the idea of material possessions and credit terrifying when put together.

  3. You know... this theory was a huge part of how the white settlers took advantage of the Native Americans in the US. The natives couldn't conceive of something so GREAT as the LAND being OWNED. It was beyond their conceptual capacity--the settlers used this again and again.

Philosophically, I agree, but functionally, a person can't act on that because nobody else is following those rules.

  4. Elizabeth: I agree with you; I'm not talking about personal belongings. What I had in mind was the big and important things; ownership to land, natural resources (including water), the mountains and the seas and the relationship between parents and children an between spouses (in monogamy)

Ben: I'm not a Marxist neither. His ideas are interesting, but every attempt at putting his ideas into practice has ended in despotic regimes far from his ideas. Hence, the last sentence in my post.

    Sheila: Thanks >:)

Hart: Very interesting what you say about the Native Americans. I got a vague sense of this from the tons of cowboy books I read as a kid, and from this great book by Howard Zinn (The People's History of USA). The way you put it into context here was great. Thanks >:)
