Swimming for Harry Potter

I'm not a big fan of Harry Potter. I have read only one of the the books (the first, with the kids). I thought Lord of the Rings was boring too. I just don't like the fantasy genre very much.

However, today little boy and I planned to go see the new Harry Potter movie in the theater. The movie is just released here. We found that 5000 tickets were pre-booked for the weekend, all sold out. Little boy was somewhat disappointed. What should we do?

We went to the nice waterpark we have down on the harbor, right by the quay where the big cruise ships come alongside in summer. The waterpark is indoor, otherwise it could be used only for a month in the summer. The kids love it, the diving tower, the wave pool and the tube slides. And there is a big pool for competitive swimmers of course. The parents can relax in the warm pool, with panorama windows on the sea side. It gives an illusion of swimming in the middle of the fjord.

Little boy was happy and we still have the Harry Potter movie to look forward next weekend >:)

(Here's a video from our waterpark; freestyle skiers at off-season practice)

  1. My son and I will most likely go see the Potter movie. We've seen the previous ones. But not this weekend. I prefer to wait awhile and not stand in line forever.

    Your waterpark sounds wonderful!

  2. Helen: I agree, there's no hurry. The HP movie will be on for weeks and months in the theaters, plenty of time to see it >:)

  3. I couldn't get my 13 year old to go to the movie today! He loved the books, but the last one came out when he was in 5th grade, so I'm guessing he thinks he's too old for Harry. Sigh.

Waterparks are a good alternative. :) I dragged my kids to the park.

  4. I think the waterpark is a great alternative to the movie!
My son went and saw it with friends at midnight opening day - and lost a lot of sleep over it, but he said it was really good!

  5. The video reminds me of the hours spend beside a dive pool (an hour and half drive away) heart in mouth, watching my young daughter learn to do a beautiful back dive with 1/2 twist.

I think I held my breath for every dive the kids in the video did. BTW where are the girls?

    Harry who? :P

  6. I love waterparks. The whole family goes every summer to Hurricane Harbor at Six Flags Great Adventures in New Jersey. Great way to get distract your son until tickets are available.

  7. I'm not a big fan of HP either. I've seen and read more magical stories. Perhaps it's my age. But good that your kid enjoyed the swim. It's a more healthy activity than watching movie.

  8. The waterpark sounds much nicer than a stuffy movie theater! And I must confess I've never read a Harry POtter, and I've only watched about 1/2 hour of the first movie, only because my nephew begged me to, but he relented when he realised it scared me! :O

  9. It had never occurred to me before that ski jumpers practiced off diving boards, but now that I see it, it makes total sense. Cool!

And your son will enjoy the movie! (hubby isn't a fantasy fan either, though I happen to think Rowling has a lot more to recommend her--and Tolkein has some annoying habits you have to ignore to enjoy him--like ad nauseum description) So have fun with that, too!

  12. Elizabeth: The 13 yo is probably very eager to demonstrate that he's not a child anymore. My older boy just turned 17 and he's planning to se the new HP movie with his friends.

Kaylen: A good movie is worth a night of lost sleep, for sure.

Sue: Water is a soft environment and a good place to practice flips and tricks before they do it on skis. The girls? Freestyle skiing is a very boy-dominated sport. We try to do something about it, like hiring a girl-coach with special responsibility for the girls in the ski club.

Chary: The waterpark was an acceptable alternative to the HP movie. We'll watch the movie next week end.

Enid: I think JK Rawlings is a talented writer, but the fantasy genre doesn't appeal to me. I want things to be in a realistic setting.

Judy: Don't worry. It's possible to live a respectable life without having read Harry Potter. I'm more concerned about those who don't read Dostoyevsky >;)

  13. Hart: Diving is useful practice for freestyle skiers. Note that they always land feet first. Landing head first is a bad habit for skiers. Thanks for the hints regarding Tolkien, but think I've realized long time ago that it's not my kind of books >:)

Alex: Yes, good to have some alternatives when theater is out of tickets.

Anita: The waterpark is fun, almost as fun as skiing >:)
